The
Man at the Corner
First
God found me and put me on
His
path, shadowing this sixteen year old atheist through his wandering
college years, through drugs, futile philosophies---trying not to
exist---and fear of mortal illness. Then I learned there is
“Someone to Be” and was born into a new life.
This is the
first 8 chapters of the full memoir, To Baal or not to Baal. These 66
pages are an easy read, philosophical and confessional, but light. $5 TheBookPatch.com.
To
Baal or not to Baal: A Success Story
Next God
showed me I cannot live the Christian Life,
except by falling into His hands. I first learned this lesson, and then
how
to fail at teaching this grace message, and how God works through that.
When adolescence ends, at age 34, I have a position about
Christian growth that remains with me after another 34 years: God does
it all, and we gradually learn through our weaknesses to let Him do it.
The full memoir is 201 pages,
with details on the struggles of
the Christian life and theological issues in the 1970's charismatic
movement. It is a quiet adventure about living dangerously in a world
hemmed in by subtle
legalisms. $10 at TheBookPatch.com.
The Ishmael Factor:
Seeing the Heart of the Middle East Conflict
Join me in a
studied look at the Middle East conflict, using the
theological concepts of the Bible at work in political philosophy and
philosophical psychology. It argues that Ishmael and his mother Hagar
display the psychological root of the conflict. The human spirit
naturally complains against transcendent power, in God or as manifested
in earthly authority. This resistance is integral to
human consciousness. In Genesis, Hagar bequeaths to Ishmael the
particular
tactic of conceiving a “God” who supports them in their hidden fight
against God. This happens in many times and places but is highly
visible in the Ishmaelim, in Arab Muslims resisting Israel, Jews, and
Christians. The conflict is on display with the Islamic Dome of
the Rock perched upon the Temple Mount, under Israeli sovereignty but
alive with the passion of resistance.
To study this, we need a
trusted point of view, but such authority arouses suspicion on all
sides. Parts One and Two show seven
points of view, known abstractly as Attacker, Defender, Excuser,
Corrector, Postmodernist, and Religious
Pluralist. These are studied separately, under their common labels,
like Islamist, Liberal, and Conservative, to show how each enters into
the conflict. Then there is the
special point of view, the Zionist, who is a people group and
perspective like the others, but who possibly carries a “Master
Narrative” that transcends these contending
stories and makes sense of their troubled interactions. Part Three then
gives the biblical account of the psychological process that works in
varied ways with each of these ideological adversaries, but most
vehemently in the resistance of the Islamists.

The Religious
Psychology of the Middle East Conflict
Because The Ishmael Factor is long and difficult, I wrote a much
shorter account that follows the same argument, but without the details
and the documentation. You still see the people groups and the
interactions of their ideas, but this goes by quickly, and then you
have Cain’s Complaint and The Cry of Ishmael--the theory of how
Islamists and many others are following the god who preserves their
pride and supports them in their rebellion.
